It seems Georgia O'Keeffe found freedom in ignoring convention, and art and life. Her desire for freedom in her life was reflected in her paintings, just as Georgia rejected the constraints of restrictive fashions.

Her word is energetic and sensual on with predominantly floral subject matter on a grad scale.

In 1916, she first drew the attention of the New York art community in 1916 and within the next 10 years she had distinguished herself as one of America's most important modern artists.

On why O'Keeffe painted flowers: "Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small - we haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time...So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."

She lived to the ripe old age of 98 leaving a legacy of over 900 paintings, watercolours & drawings.


Georgia O'Keeffe was driven to paint from an early age.  After we are through school," she told her classmates, "I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls."

Evocative of the hand-painted, timeworn walls of a grand old Parisian mansion, the paintings in Kathe Fraga's French Wallpaper Series resemble aged decorative fresco panels adorned with  birds and flowers, vines and leaves in a modern Chinoiserie style.

Graga's beautifully vintage yet modern art is inspired by vintage silky kimonos, hand-worked embroidery, lacquered little boxes, blocked wallpaper and panels from years ago, distressed with age, revealing a soft loveliness still…you’ll see layered colours peeking out behind one another—pinks, blues, lavender—speckles of gold, a wisp of glitter. Look for a small shy heart. A nestle of lovebirds. A French phrase. Each piece meant to be seen as part of a larger scene that’s been hidden away…until now.

Illustration Inspiration

Oh my... I am literally shaking with inspiration this morning. I have been looking all over the place for illustration design trends and have come across the most talent and innovative artists.

I love the look of fashion illustration - when done well, along with street art. Vector art can get so mundane and dreary compared to the gestural quality of watercolour and ink although there are some brilliant vector artists around.

This morning though I have been captivated by the life, soul and passion of the images below. I am head over heels in love with the doodling and playful quality of Marguerite Sauvage and plan to create a post specifically for her later in the month when I get time. An all time favourite illustrator is Australia's Neryl Walker, who's work graces the pages of magazines, books and cosmetics packaging, most recently for ID Bare Minerals.
