Chinoiserie is a French term, and signifies "Chinese-esque", referring theme in European artistic styles since the 17th century, reflecting Chinese artistic influences. Chinoiserie is characterised by the use of whimsical imagery of an imagined China, asymmetry in format and whimsical contrasts of scale, and by the attempts to imitate Chinese porcelain and use of lacquer finishes.
